Inspired by their grandfathers, Hugo & Hoby's founders created a sustainable furniture brand centered around quality craftsmanship and environmental responsibility. Both Hugo Kukelhaus (grandfather to co-founder Fred) and Hobart "Hoby" Young (co-founder Ben’s grandfather) were seasoned craftsmen. They were also were passionate about community and the environment. Their story is a huge part of what makes Hugo & Hoby so unique.

About Hugo & Hoby

Hugo & Hoby is a modern brand with old-world values. They create handcrafted, sustainable furniture that's made to last, designing pieces in a way that really respects the materials they're made with.

This brand takes inspiration from a time when it mattered to make something that lasts. A time when people saw furniture as an investment to be passed down for generations.

Hugo & Hoby’s down-to-earth approach is also clear in their sustainable practices. Considering themselves caretakers of the environment, they only work with local materials. If for some reason they can't, they will then source their wood as close to the final location as possible. It’s one of the many reasons we love having them as a client!

Their recent project with Yale University is an amazing example of this. Although it was a huge project, Hugo & Hoby found the materials locally, reducing their carbon footprint and lumber impact.

Quality craftsmanship, community, and sustainability are all woven into the tapestry of this brand.

The Power of Sustainable Furniture Design

More and more, people are realizing how important it is to respect the environment. This includes manufacturing furniture in a way that's kinder to the planet. After all, why would you make a home with something that will take a home away from an endangered animal?

The truth is, we need sustainable design in order for the human race to continue. And so, the goal of sustainable furniture design is to follow environmentally-friendly practices. This includes building furniture from recycled, upcycled, or salvaged materials.

Sustainable furniture design recognizes that if we don’t practice responsible manufacturing now, we won’t have a planet to call home in a few years. And as Hugo & Hoby have shown, it is possible to turn salvaged wood into designer furniture.

This team doesn’t have to travel far to source their materials either, keeping their carbon footprint low. By producing high-quality furniture that's made to last instead of ending up in landfills Hugo & Hoby ensure that your bespoke pieces will last for generations.

They also prioritize those who make their products. These are artisans who pay meticulous attention to detail at every step of the process. The end product is finely crafted, functional furniture made by a community, to be cherished for a lifetime.

How sustainable furniture can change the world

Right now, there's a big demand for hand-made, sustainable, and locally sourced goods around the world. It’s a revolution that is making sure customers don't have to choose between convenience and quality.

It allows consumers to support local craftsmen while making well-crafted products more accessible. It's remarkable to own a piece of furniture crafted with real passion.

Now, there are different kinds of sustainable furniture. From pieces made using recycled materials to furniture that’s made only from salvaged, locally-sourced wood. Hugo & Hoby fall under the latter category and their commitment to sustainable furniture design helps create a cleaner, greener and better world.

What’s more, Hugo & Hoby want to ensure a sustainable future for their business and the environment. In addition to using salvaged wood, they donate to environmental non-profit 1% for the Planet. Through this incredible organization, they’ve planted over 11, 000 trees.

This keeps the circle of life going for the creatures who call the forests home. It also ensures that future crafters have more than enough timber to work with.
